More than likely you will have been living in the halls of residence for a year before you have to make this decision. Therefore you will have hopefully developed a network of friends whom you can choose the ideal group of housemates.
But be warned; just because you enjoy sharing a drink with someone in the university bar doesn’t mean that you’ll gel as housemates.
When choosing your housemates it is best to start with some self-analysis. Think about what type of people would fit in with your personality.
Plan the process before you start and it is best to build up the household gradually, one person at a time. When you have selected the first person invite them to join you when interviewing a possible second and so on.
Questions to ask when interviewing prospective housemates:
- What is your attitude towards housework?
- What time do you normally go to bed?
- What type of music are you in to?
- Are you sure you can afford your share of the rent?
- Do you smoke?
- Can you cook?
